Emeralds are a form of the mineral beryl making emerald a cousin of aquamarine. Composed of hexagonal crystals, emerald is a cyclosilicate meaning it is extremely intricate and a well connected gemstone, the perfect representative for the month of May.

Emeralds have been highly regarded by ancient civilizations in Africa, Asia, and South America for over 5000 years, tying it’s green color to royalty. The Roman emperor, Nero, enjoyed viewing gladiator fights through thin sheets of Emerald.

Legends claim that wearers of emerald could foresee the future and protect themselves from evil spells. Its green pigment has been fabled to relieve eye strain and soothe some amount of stress.
