Hadrosaur Maiasaura Femur
This is the right femur of a Maiasaura. Maiasaura stands out as a name because it does not end with a ‘rus’ like the more familiar saurus. This is because Maiasaura is intended as a feminine name which is why it ends in saura rather than the masculine saurus. The Maiasuara, meaning good mother lizard, got its name because when the fossilized eggs were found it was thought that they did not just lay eggs and wander off but, stayed around its young. some remains show that the young had undeveloped hind legs. The thinking is that the mother would bring food back to the nest to care for its young. They are members of the Hadrosaurid family, meaning duck billed dinosaurs.Late Campanian of the Cretaceous.
