Petrified Wood Tessellated Round 29" x 37". This enormous and showy tessellated petrified wood slice combines over 210 pounds of semi-precious gemstone, with a modest amount of neutrally colored grout and a considerable amount of artisan skills…all in order to do what Mother Nature left slightly undone.

Super large trees, like the one this piece is based on, rarely fossilized at more than a 90% complete level. There is a direct relationship between the enormously thick wood that needed to be petrified and the ability of the mineral-laced ground waters to get to almost all of the wood, but not entirely all the way through…leaving small voids, pockets and incompletely petrified wood spaces. The artisan here, sliced the 90% complete tree stump and then carefully and artfully recomposed the piece to show off its enormous natural beauty. Then it was perfected by being polished.

This piece is worth considering both for the huge impression it makes and for its relatively low price per square foot of polished petrified wood.

We welcome your questions and look forward to discussing why this incredibly rare, gigantic slice might make an interesting décor choice for you. The view was taken standing on edge. Suggested use as a table top. Please inquire with our Taos Gallery for more on this piece.

Some petrified wood factoids you might find interesting:

1.   Arizona Petrified Wood is primarily composed of quartz based semiprecious stones known more generally as onyx, jasper and chalcedony.

2.   Petrified “Rainbow” Wood is Arizona’s State Fossil

3.   These very old tree fossils hail from the Triassic Era (225-180 mya)

4.   The scientific name is named after Arizona - Araucarioxylon Arizonicum

5.   Touchstone features many examples with natural bark preserved around the entire outer edge.

6.   Each retail specimen has been cut and polished by an expert artisan with expensive diamond encrusted lapidary tooling.

7.   Our specimens were collected from a few private ranches in the general area of Holbrook, Arizona.

8.   Specimens with the most vibrant colored PW specimens found underground, not exposed to elements and erosion. The colors themselves are caused by trace amounts of minerals, often metal ions. For example, red is most often caused by iron ions and greens come from copper or chromium.
