Rounded Palm Fossil
Rounded Palm Fossil from the famous Green River Formation. Your first thought would not think of Wyoming as a place where you would find palms, but the climate was a lot different millions of years ago. Lakes thrived and later dried up as the climate changed through earth's episodes of climatic history took place. This near complete palm is a rare fossil as it is an almost complete palm which was revealed after careful excavation layer by layer through limestone. Plant forms in fossils are rare due to the bacteria eating action that destroys the plant but in this case the large leaf was covered by sediment that cut off the oxygen thus preserving the plant. As an added bonus there is a fish fossil also rare.
